Charles River Paths

This scenic stretch along the Charles River is a favorite among tourists and locals alike, with a car-free bike and pedestrian path.

A favorite destination for many, the Esplanade features the world-famous Hatch Shell, where over half a million people join the Boston Pops and the world’s greatest fireworks display each year on July 4th.

The Esplanade’s 3 miles of bike and pedestrian paths connect several of the city’s footbridges, and are part of the larger Dr. Paul Dudley White Charles River Bike Path, which runs for a loop of over 24 miles along both shores of the Charles River through Boston, Cambridge, Watertown, and new extensions to Newton and Waltham.

Grab a Bluebike at the Esplanade station at Beacon & Arlington Streets.

  • Cross the Fiedler Footbridge to the Hatch.
  • Ride in either direction along the Charles River to splash pads, playgrounds, and public fields. Or take a look around Storrow Lagoon.
  • End your ride back at the Esplanade station or continue down Beacon Street to the Charles St at Beacon St station, and enjoy a walk around Boston Common.
